1. Use CityMapper instead of Google Maps for public transportation directions
CityMapper is more accurate and gets updated more frequently. Google maps has left me stranded at a subway station more than once.
2. Sign up for MTA alerts
You can get real-time updates on the subway lines that you care about through this page. This can help you find other options if your train is suddenly not running for any reason.
3. Always read the MTA Planned Service announcement flyers
If you see there flyers, read them. Changes are planned for this line and this will help you plan ahead.
4. Carry Cash with you
A lot of places and store are cash only or cash-preferred. Some stores will charge you extra to use a credit-card.
5. Use renthop.com to find an apartment instead of StreetEasy
StreetEasy is very popular and everyone uses it. There will be lines to view an apartment and you most likely will not get it. renthop.com has exclusive listings on their website with a lot less people competing for them.
